Ray waited patiently in the Great Maw for her student to appear. A glance at her watch told him he was already a few minutes late, but that was alright. She'd sort of sprung this session on him, anyway, so he probably knew what was to come.
Well... he'd know part of it, anyway. She had a couple of tricks up her sleeve for this particular little test, and she couldn't wait to see how he handled them.

"Hey!" He waved as his aunt came into sight, grinning. He was gonna get to burn and freeze things, fun times. "Sorry...I'm late. Larkin trouble."
He came to a stop in front of her and bent over for a second with his hands on his knees, trying to get his air back.

Date: 2011-02-06 02:22 am (UTC)"I'm always studying! So what're you throwing at me today?" Eli found himself bouncing slightly on the balls of his feet in excitement. He could handle anything, as long as it wasn't a giant caterpillar or something.

Date: 2011-02-06 02:40 am (UTC)In response to his question, she only smiled secretively, closing her eyes and breathing deeply. This was going to be just as hard for her as it would be for him, albeit in a different way. One more breath, and she was calling on the power of Darkness and fighting to force it into the shape she wanted. It wasn't easy, but after a few seconds, it fell obediently into place, and a shadowy replica of a Darkside was towering above them.
Ray sighed and opened her eyes, smile still on her lips. "That," she said, "is what I'm throwing at you, Eli. Defeat it, and you pass. Fail, and you get to do some drills for a while."
She tried to keep the strain from the spell hidden. Eli didn't need to know how difficult this was for her, and he'd be too busy fighting to see her gulp down an ether or two when her power got too low. Besides that, there was no way he could know that this wasn't a real Heartless - and it would benefit them to see how he'd react if they ever did make another appearance.

"Holy shit." A faint voice in the back of his head offhandedly commented that it was a good thing his mother wasn't here to hear him say that, then he shook it away, backing up. "Where'd that come from?!"
He needed a bigger sword.

Date: 2011-02-06 03:08 am (UTC)"That, Eli, is a Darkside. A type of Heartless. You'll have to keep watch to make sure it doesn't stomp on you, or slam its fist down on you, or something like that. Oh, and when it does slam its fist down, it summons Shadows that you will also have to fight. And I want you to use as much of your magic as possible while while you do; you can use your sword, but focus on the magic. I'm sure you've got plenty of Ethers and Elixirs ready if you need them, right?"
The creature didn't give him a chance to answer. It lunged, swiping one black hand at them both. Ray dove out of the way, leaving the boy on his own.

Date: 2011-02-06 03:19 am (UTC)The monster turned and Eli's racing thoughts were interrupted by having to dive out of the way again. Okay. Focus on magic. Right. Where?
He began to edge his way around the thing, trying to stay behind it while he called Fire to his hand. It started out as a strong flame, then began to waver and shrink.
"Hey, don't do that!" He shook his hand in frustration, groaning as the fire sputtered and went out with a hiss. For the love of- Eli's next move was to conjure Blizzard which held up loads better than it's predecessor. He glanced back up at the Darkside, noted the hand coming down, and decided aiming for that was as good as anything. A second later, his ice spell had hit it's target, and Eli was moving again.

Date: 2011-02-06 03:28 am (UTC)The Shadows swarmed around him, staying just under the surface until they could get behind him. If he'd paid enough attention to the physical training she'd made him do, though, that wouldn't be an issue.

Date: 2011-02-06 03:42 am (UTC)It didn't take long. At least three sprang out of the ground at the same time, or close to it; Eli was too busy swinging and dodging to actually compare. He got the first two fairly easily, but the third surprised him and actually managed to get onto his back, latching scrabbling hands around his neck. Okay, time to panic. Without thinking about it, his fire spell flared to life and he twisted his head around as he brought up his hand, not wanting to set his hair on fire. The flames engulfed the Shadow, killing it.
"Ha! Who's next?"
He glanced around at the others, then groaned. Stupid question.
sorry for late!tag ._.
Date: 2011-02-26 03:44 pm (UTC)Well, okay, maybe they weren't trying to do that. But he didn't need to know.
"Concentrate, grasshopper," she called out to him. "Remember, these guys are trying to take your Heart; you can't just stand around and brag about killing one or two of them! Stay on the ball here!"
Right on cue, one of the Shadows rose out of the ground behind him and lunged, right as Ray was preparing another little bit of magic. Her eyes locked onto Eli, waiting to see which spell he would cast next. If everything went according to plan, and she didn't lose control over the Dark spell, he'd be getting another curve ball thrown at him, to make this the hardest test he'd ever faced.
She was going to try to steal his magic.
S'okay. ^^
Date: 2011-03-04 10:53 pm (UTC)He allowed himself the tiniest smile before downing the Ether and turning most of his attention back to the Darkside. Oh boy. He still wasn't sure how to deal with this.

Date: 2011-03-07 12:46 am (UTC)The Darkside, however, was still looming over them menacingly. And now that all the Shadows were gone, it wanted to get in some damage of its own. How? By brute force, of course, as it swept one large hand at Eli to knock him off of his feet.

Date: 2011-03-09 10:25 pm (UTC)Eli briefly considered grabbing his sword and swinging at one of it's legs, then tossed the idea aside in favor of some more magic. He could try Fire again, it might actually work this time. Cupping his hands in front of him, he rose to his feet, smirking as the flame came to life in his palms. He shaped it into a ball, preparing to throw it at the Heartless.
Let's see how it liked this.
