Ray waited patiently in the Great Maw for her student to appear. A glance at her watch told him he was already a few minutes late, but that was alright. She'd sort of sprung this session on him, anyway, so he probably knew what was to come.

Well... he'd know part of it, anyway. She had a couple of tricks up her sleeve for this particular little test, and she couldn't wait to see how he handled them.

Eli came trotting down the path, slightly out of breath and trying to close his compass and shove it in his jacket pocket without dropping it. His aunt had done this to him before, randomly mentioning, 'Oh hey I need you here at this time and this place, I don't care what else you're doing', and he was actually pretty good about making it on time, even if he'd been caught up in a video game or a book. He was a bit late today, however, because he'd gotten 'caught up' in some rope Larkin had found somewhere. She'd gotten into her head that if he wouldn't sit still while she tried to kiss him, she'd just have to keep him from moving.

He was really, really glad he'd inherited his mother's knack for untying knots.

"Hey!" He waved as his aunt came into sight, grinning. He was gonna get to burn and freeze things, fun times. "Sorry...I'm late. Larkin trouble."

He came to a stop in front of her and bent over for a second with his hands on his knees, trying to get his air back.

"Awe, if you'd known she had me tied to a chair I think you woulda left me there." He accused with a smirk, then straightened up. Test? Oh goody, he could handle that. His magic might like to fizzle out on him sometimes, but he could still fight with a sword. Finally. It'd taken forever to talk his mom into letting him try something other than his staff, which he frankly sucked at, even with aunt Song's help.

"I'm always studying! So what're you throwing at me today?" Eli found himself bouncing slightly on the balls of his feet in excitement. He could handle anything, as long as it wasn't a giant caterpillar or something.

"Yeah, pictures, real helpful." Eli muttered, rolling his jacket sleeves up so he could reach the arm guard on his right arm. It was actually an object of holding, and he'd picked this one at the Star Market instead of the bracelet his mom had been trying to pawn off on him because this looked cooler. A moment more, and he'd drawn his sword from it, then glanced up curiously as the sky around them seemed to darken.

"FFF, sure. I can-" His words died as he stared up at the Darkside towering over them. Where the-

"Holy shit." A faint voice in the back of his head offhandedly commented that it was a good thing his mother wasn't here to hear him say that, then he shook it away, backing up. "Where'd that come from?!"

He needed a bigger sword.

Eli jumped sideways as the hand passed him, landing hard on the ground and scrambling to his feet in an instant. What was he supposed to do with this? Oh sure, throw magic at it and maybe try and slice it and for Pete's sake, was she trying to kill him? A Heartless this big? What about a Wyvern? He could probably do better than his mother there-

The monster turned and Eli's racing thoughts were interrupted by having to dive out of the way again. Okay. Focus on magic. Right. Where?

He began to edge his way around the thing, trying to stay behind it while he called Fire to his hand. It started out as a strong flame, then began to waver and shrink.

"Hey, don't do that!" He shook his hand in frustration, groaning as the fire sputtered and went out with a hiss. For the love of- Eli's next move was to conjure Blizzard which held up loads better than it's predecessor. He glanced back up at the Darkside, noted the hand coming down, and decided aiming for that was as good as anything. A second later, his ice spell had hit it's target, and Eli was moving again.

Geeze, this was fun. Eli had lost his footing for a second as the ground shook, but he gained it back as he noticed the darkness pooling under him. Uh oh. Dancing back a bit and hoping he wouldn't be stepped on while his attention was divided, he raised his sword, waiting for one of the creepers to pounce.

It didn't take long. At least three sprang out of the ground at the same time, or close to it; Eli was too busy swinging and dodging to actually compare. He got the first two fairly easily, but the third surprised him and actually managed to get onto his back, latching scrabbling hands around his neck. Okay, time to panic. Without thinking about it, his fire spell flared to life and he twisted his head around as he brought up his hand, not wanting to set his hair on fire. The flames engulfed the Shadow, killing it.

"Ha! Who's next?"

He glanced around at the others, then groaned. Stupid question.

S'okay. ^^

"I know, I know!" Eli shouted back, face burning. Geeze, when his dad heard about this...When Larkin heard about it. He was about to pull an Ether from his arm guard when the hair on the back of his neck stood up. Instead, he raised a hand and Thunder shot down, wiping out the Shadow in mid-lunge, along with the others rising out of the Darkness.

He allowed himself the tiniest smile before downing the Ether and turning most of his attention back to the Darkside. Oh boy. He still wasn't sure how to deal with this.

Eli managed to get out of the way of the Darkside's hand, but just barely; he still went sprawling, losing his sword as he came to his knees. Okay, so he could do this. On his own, sure, but hadn't Sora dealt with one of these things when he had no idea what he was doing? He was still breathing.

Eli briefly considered grabbing his sword and swinging at one of it's legs, then tossed the idea aside in favor of some more magic. He could try Fire again, it might actually work this time. Cupping his hands in front of him, he rose to his feet, smirking as the flame came to life in his palms. He shaped it into a ball, preparing to throw it at the Heartless.

Let's see how it liked this.
